Weekly Update: March 17th - 21st

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: Multiplication & Division review!

Learning Intentions:
  • Analyze and apply strategies for multiplication and division within 100 (Grade 3)
  • Recall and apply multiplication number facts, with factors to 12, and related division number facts (Grade 4)
  • Multiply and divide 3-digit natural numbers by 1-digit natural numbers using personal strategies (Grade 4)
  • Examine standard algorithms for multiplication and division. (Grade 4)
  • Investigate multiplication and division strategies
  • Recognize interpretations of multiplication and division in various contexts

For the past two weeks, the Grade 3's and Grade 4's have been working on different tasks in Math. The Grade 3's have been solidifying their multiplication and division skills through completing two different math mysteries. As students have finished their mysteries, they have brought them home, so feel free to take a peek at their progress. The Grade 4's have been developing their skills to solve 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication and division equations. We have taught them multiple strategies that they can use and have given them lots of practice to work with the different strategies. For multiplication, students practiced the strategies of repeated addition, the box method, the lattice method and the standard algorithm. For division, students practiced the area model/box method and the standard algorithm. Take some time to ask your student what their preferred strategies are.

Here are some videos that the Grade 4's can use to review the various strategies we have discussed:
After Spring Break, we will have one week to review before our unit test. You may want to take some time over Spring Break to practice some basic facts or to complete some practice questions.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Weekly Update: March 10th - 14th

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities the Grade 4's have been working on this week in Science: learning about Earth's different systems, including the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere!

Learning Intentions:
  • Understanding that Earth's systems interact with one another, resulting in environments that sustain life.
  • Making connections between human activity and Earth's systems.
  • Analyzing the interconnectedness of Earth's systems.

This week the Grade 4's started their unit focused on Earth's Systems. Students went outside and made different observations about our environment using their five senses. They also learned about the different systems on Earth, such as the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. Ask your child what each sphere is composed of! Throughout this unit students will continue to investigate how different systems are interconnected and how Earth sustains life!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week with the Grade 3's in Social Studies: Mapping Ukraine

Learning Intentions:

  • What are the traditions, celebrations, stories and practice in the communities that connect the people to the past and to each other?
  • Where on a globe and/or map, are the communities in relation to Canada?
  • Use cardinal directions to locate place on maps

This week the Grade 3's were introduced to the country Ukraine.  We looked at a world map to identify where it in the world and in relation to Canada and Peru (our previously studied country). Students then worked on labelling nearby countries on a map of Europe and colouring the map nicely.  They then learned about the different landforms in Ukraine and labelled these on a map of the country. Students also read and answered questions about some introductory concepts of the country such as the flag, coat of arms, its national dish and sport.

Reminders:
- Please book a time for online conferences on PowerSchool.
- Our FitSet Ninja residency begins on Monday and will continue until the end of next week! Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately and comfortably to jump, climb and roll.  No loose jewelry or baggy clothing, and hair should be tied back.
Education Assurance Survey- This information is used to get a pulse of the community and to better understand how staff, students, and families are feeling about the school in general. All families of children in grade 4,5,6 at TRS will have received an email with a link to the survey, and their random access code to initiate the survey. The survey can be accessed at https://www.alberta.ca/alberta-education-assurance-survey#jumplinks-2

Have a wonderful weekend!

Weekly Update: March 3rd - 7th

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: Informative Writing

Learning Intentions:
  • Examine a variety of literary forms used to communicate ideas and information.
  • Differentiate between fiction and non-fiction texts according to content.
  • Determine how the structure of texts can help organize the expression or understanding of ideas or information.
  • Investigate ways that non-fiction texts can be organized to support sharing of information.
  • Discuss a variety of facts and opinions expressed in non-fiction texts.
Students are working on creating a non-fiction, informative writing piece.  This week we are learning what makes an informative text and how they are organized. We took some time to look through different non-fiction books to find the features of informative writing. Students are starting to brainstorm topics that they would like to research and then breaking those big topics into smaller topics.  Students will then learn how to write introduction sentences, use transition words to develop their informative paragraphs and then write concluding sentences to finish off their paragraph.
Ask your child about their topic for their informative writing piece.

Reminders:
- We are starting our gymnastics unit in Physical Education starting on Monday.  Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately and comfortably to jump, climb and roll.  No loose jewelry or baggy clothing, and hair should be tied back.
