Weekly Update: January 27th - 31st

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: Poetry!

Learning Intentions:

• Investigate words or phrases applied creatively in poetry.
• Examine poetic structures that contribute to creative expression of ideas.
• Experiment with creating haikus and limericks.
• Investigate figurative language used in imaginative ways.
• Experiment with creating verse, free verse, or concrete poetry.

We have learned about figurative language devices such as similes, metaphors, hyperboles and personification.  Students were given time to create their own and highlight examples of each in various passages.  We have also learned about and written our own haikus and acrostic poems.  We will look at more poems next week!

Weekly Update: January 20th - 24th

Happy Friday!

Here is a look at one of the activities we did this week: Reader's Theatre!

Learning Intentions:

• Engage in dialogue to express and understand messages.
• Contribute respectfully to a variety of interactions that involve listening and speaking.
• Identify where phrasing and pausing can support understanding or create effects.
• Select appropriate volume, intonation, phrasing, and pausing to create a desired effect when speaking or presenting.
• Adjust verbal and non-verbal language to enhance clarity or create effects when communicating.

Students are so excited to be working on Reader's Theatre! Students were given a group and a script and have time each day to practice reading and creating a play. Students have been experimenting with getting into their character by using difference voices and actions. When practicing Reader's Theatre, students are developing their ability to read aloud with appropriate volume, speed and expression, while accurately decoding the words.  Ask your child what play they are doing and what their role is! Students are excited for this opportunity and some are already planning costumes and props that they can use to enhance their play. We will present our plays next week!

Weekly Update: January 13th - 17th

Happy Friday!

Here is a look at ones of the tasks we have been working on this week: Handwriting!

Learning Intentions:

• Written messages can be created or enhanced using a variety of digital or non-digital methods or tools, such as cursive handwriting
• Messages communicated through cursive handwriting can reflect artistry through consideration of letter formation, size, proportion, slant
• Using cursive handwriting to write texts with appropriate letter formation, size, proportion, and slant

Students have really enjoyed practicing their cursive handwriting! Last week we went through the lowercase and uppercase letters, with students tracing the letters, writing them on their own, and tracing sentences that included each letter. This week, we have been practicing handwriting the names of our classmates and the staff members at TRS! Students have already come quite far with their ability to properly form their letters. It is an important skill to be familiar with as it provides students with another option of writing their ideas down and it helps them practice reading handwritten text. Ask your child to write their name in handwriting for you!

A look ahead:

• Next week we are starting our Multiplication & Division unit, our poetry unit, Reader's Theatre and new units in Science & Social!

Reminders:

- Our Alien In-line Skating lessons start next week! The Grade 3/4's will have lessons on Monday January 20th, Friday January 24th and Monday January 27th. On these days, students are asked to bring their helmets, wear clothing they can move in, and bring an extra snack.

Weekly Update: January 6th -10th

Here is a look at the Literacy work we have been working on this week: Persuasive Writing!

Learning Intentions:

• Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes.
• Create written texts using a variety of forms and structures.
• Share perspectives on a topic in a clear and focused manner.
• Experiment with ideas and word choice to create beginnings that catch the audience’s attention.
• Use organizational processes, methods, or tools to support the creation of written texts and to develop creative expression.

This week we learned that to persuade someone is to try and convince them about a certain topic.  We listened to various examples of stories where the narrator was trying to convince someone to get a certain pet, to eat a healthy meal etc.  Students were introduced to persuasive vocabulary and phrases to help them plan their own persuasive paragraph convincing their audience of what the absolute best breakfast food is.  Students used an O.R.E.O. planning sheet that helped them to organize their ideas through writing out their opinion, 3 reasons, 3 explanations for each reason and finally restating their opinion at the end.  When students finish their paragraphs they will get rewarded with an Oreo cookie.  Please feel free to take a look at these on our Google Classroom as they are typing out their good copies on there.

Reminders:

- Please read, sign and return the Alien In-line Forms ASAP.

- Your child should have brought home their good copy of their Goldilocks stories and feedback that I provided to them. Please take the time to look over the amazing work!

- We will have our Geometry Unit Test next week. Students should have brought home a review sheet that goes through various concepts from the unit this week. There are also new Pixel Art Mysteries on our Google Classroom that students can complete before the test. The test will cover the following concepts:

• Identifying polygons/non-polygons
• Identifying regular/irregular polygons
• Identifying parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines
• Finding 90 degree angles
• Describing features of polygons (ex. number of sides, type of lines, name of polygon, etc.)
• Identifying translations, rotations and reflections
• Comparing angles
• Determining complementary and supplementary angles (Grade 4)
• Identifying triangles based on side length or angles (Grade 4)
• Using a protractor to measure angles (Grade 4)
