Weekly Update: May 26th - 30th

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities from the week: Estimating Area & Preparing for our Measurement Unit Test!
 Learning Intentions:
  • Relate millimetres, centimetres, and metres
  • Relate inches to feet and yards
  • Justify the choice of millimetres, centimetres, or metres to measure various lengths
  • Measure lengths of straight lines and curves, with millimetres, centimetres, or metres
  • Recognize length expressed in metric or imperial units
  • Determine the perimeter of polygons
  • Determine the length of an unknown side given the perimeter of a polygon
  • Estimate length by comparing to a benchmark or referent
  • Measure area with standard units by tiling with square units (Grade 4)
  • Determine the area of a rectangle using multiplication (Grade 4)
  • Solve problems involving area of rectangles (Grade 4)
  • Estimate an area by visualizing, using referents or rearrange partial units (Grade 4)
This week we continued practicing calculating the area of rectangles by using the formula Area = Base x Height. We also used referents such as base 10 blocks and fingertips to estimate the area of rectangles. We played the unfair game and completed some pixel art mysteries on Google Classroom to help us prepare for our Measurement Unit Test that will take place on Monday, June 2nd.  If you want to provide your child with additional practice for our upcoming test, the curricular outcomes that will be covered on the test are listed above. You can ensure they have completed their pixel art mysteries, practice measurement tasks on Knowledgehook, have them measure various items around the house, or check out some of these games:

Reminders:
  • Our Full-School Zoo Field Trip is on Wednesday, June 4th. Please ensure you have signed and returned your child's form. We are still looking for volunteers to support our field trip, so if you have your valid police clearance and are available to volunteer, please sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/DY4CW
  • For the field trip, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, with good walking shoes. Students will also need their own packed lunch and a waterbottle.
Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update: May 20 - 23rd

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we did this week: Field Trip to Telus Spark!

Learning Intentions:

  • Understandings of the living world, Earth, and space are deepened by investigating natural systems and their interactions.
  • The universe includes all of space and everything in it.
  • Objects in space include: the Moon, the Sun (a star), stars and their planets, planets and their moons
  • Most objects in space are more easily observed at night.
  • Technologies for viewing objects in space include binoculars, telescopes, planetariums
  • Observing objects in space helps us connect Earth to its place in the universe.
  • Compare observations of objects in space taken during the day and night.
  • Compare technologies for viewing objects in space.

We started our day by attending an Infinity Dome Show about Pluto.  It was amazing to see all the planets up above us and all around us, see their orbits and try to understand how planets came to be categorized as planets when there are so many things orbiting the sun.  Students then got to explore the many exhibits and go play at the outdoor playground.  There were VR experiences, gummy bear experiments, food exhibits, and lots of other fun things the kids got to experience. What was your child's favourite part of the trip? What was one new thing they learned? We had a blast and we hope your child did too :)

Reminders:
  • If you haven't returned your pink Lacrosse forms, please return them for Monday morning as our residency begins on Monday, May 26th.
If you have your police clearance and are available to volunteer on June 4th for our full school field trip, please sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/DY4CW

Have a wonderful weekend!

Weekly Update: May 12th - 16th

Happy Friday!

Here is an activity we have been working on this week: Narrative Writing
Learning Intentions:
  • Recognize and use figurative language in oral and written communication.
  • Revise written texts for accuracy, clarity, or appeal by adding, removing, or changing words or sentences.
  • Include a variety of carefully selected words and sensory detail to add interest and keep audiences engaged.
  • Communicate personal voice or the voice of characters in narratives through dialogue.
Students have been continuing to work through the writing process while creating their own short stories.  We focused on dialogue and how to use quotation marks correctly.  We talked about adjectives and ensured we included these in our writing and underlined them in green when revising.  Students then got to focus on the characters in their story and described what they are like on the outside but also how they behave and what they think and feel and why.  This will hopefully help them write more descriptive stories. Some students are already on the final stage of the writing process: publishing! They are working hard to complete their stories and share them with their classmates!

Reminders:
  • We have our Telus Spark Field Trip on Tuesday! Students are asked to arrive to school on time, with a packed snack and lunch. It will also be helpful to dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes as students will have some time to explore Telus Spark and may want to visit the outdoor Brainasium.
  • We have sent home multiple learning artifacts and quizzes this week. Please take the time to review your child's work with them.
Have a wonderful long weekend!

Weekly Update: May 5th - 9th

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities from the week: Measuring Lengths & Perimeter!
 Learning Intentions:
  • Relate millimetres, centimetres, and metres
  • Relate inches to feet and yards
  • Justify the choice of millimetres, centimetres, or metres to measure various lengths
  • Measure lengths of straight lines and curves, with millimetres, centimetres, or metres
  • Recognize length expressed in metric or imperial units
  • Determine the perimeter of polygons
  • Determine the length of an unknown side given the perimeter of a polygon
Last week we started our Math unit focused on Measurement! So far, students have had the opportunity to practice measuring various items using millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, feet and yards. Students worked through different stations that required them to measure curved and straight lines, as well as find objects of a certain length. This week we started looking at calculating the perimeter of different objects and polygons. We calculated the perimeter when the side lengths were given to us, measured side lengths on our own, and determined the value of a mystery side when given the total perimeter. Next we will look at area! We have included the link to a game students can play at home to continue practicing their perimeter skills!

 Reminders:
  • Field trip forms were sent home earlier this week. If you haven't already, please sign and return these ASAP. We still require additional parent volunteers to join us, so if you have your police clearance and are available on May 20th, please let us know!
  • Unfortunately we have had to delay sending home some work and assessments. Please look out for multiple artifacts of learning next week!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Weekly Update: April 28th - May 2nd

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities from the week: Yellow Steps Residency!
 Learning Intentions:
  • Grade 3: Students analyze and describe how plants and animals interact with each other and with the environment.
    • (classification, environmental protection, food chain interactions, Indigenous knowledge of plants and animals)
  • Grade 4: Students analyze organisms and relate their external structures to functions.
    • (find and classify local plants, demonstrating respect when interacting with plants and animals in local environment)
This week we had the opportunity to work with Jenn from Yellow Steps! She helped us learn more about our community, specifically the 1 km radius around our school. On our first visit, we walked to Shouldice Accessible Park and discussed the different parts of our ecosystem. We then started our field work, observing and taking notes about the different insects, animals, plants and birds that we saw at the park. During our second visit, we went to John Hextall Park and once again observed the different signs of our ecosystem around us and we compared our observations to those that we made at Shouldice Park. It was so nice to get outside in our community and deepen our understanding of the plants and animals that we have in Montgomery!

Check out some pictures from our time spent at Shouldice Park & John Hextall Park!

Reminders:
  • Please keep an eye out for Science/Social Quizzes to be sent home next week, as well as our Algebra Tests.
  • We will also send home our Telus Spark Field Trip forms next week. Please read, sign and return them ASAP.
Have a wonderful weekend!
