Happy Friday!
Here is a look at one of the Science activities the Grade 4's did this week: Creating a Waste Management Plan!
Learning Intentions:
- Compare the different methods of waste management and discuss their environmental impacts.
- Develop a personal plan to reduce waste.
- Understand the different methods of waste management that can reduce negative environmental impacts, such as reducing, reusing, recycling, repurposing, repairing and composting.
Grade 4 students have been learning about different types of waste, how they are managed and the environmental impacts of each method of management. To culminate their learning, students were tasked with creating a waste management plan to help the environment. Students identified the waste that they often create, brainstormed different ways they could reduce their waste, and set goals for themselves on how to reduce their impact. Students came up with different ideas such as bringing waste-free lunches, using reusable containers and recycling more often. Students are now tasked with implementing their goal. We will check in with how their goal is going after Winter Break!

Here is a look at one of the Social Studies activities the Grade 3's did this week: Mapping skills of Peru!
- examine the geographic and characteristics that shape communities in other parts of the world
- create and use a simple map to locate communities studied in the world
- use cardinal and intermediate directions to locate places on maps and globes
We looked at a map of the world and saw where Canada is in relation to other countries, specifically countries some of us come from and Peru. We then zoomed in and worked on a map of South America. Students identified the countries surrounding Peru and labelled their maps accordingly. We practiced using cardinal directions to talk about where countries are in relation to each other (i.e., Peru is west of Brazil). We continued to practice mapping by learning the different land regions of this South American country (the coast, Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest). After reading about the regions, we identified them on our own maps and coloured them.

Holiday Book Exchange
A letter went home last Friday about a holiday book exchange we will be doing in our classrooms. Please read through carefully and try and have your wrapped gently used book in before Monday, December 16th. We plan to exchange these books on our last day and hopefully enjoy starting to read them together.
Reminders:
- Please see the upcoming Spirit Days next week at the 'Important Dates' tab on the side of the blog.
- On December 20th, we are asking students to bring in a special snack (ex. popcorn, chips, cookies) to enjoy during our final day before Winter Break.
- Many students have overdue library books. Please check with your child and return them on Monday.
Have a wonderful weekend!
